I, like most young people, am addicted to social media.

This didn’t really bother me until I did the maths and realised that spending 3.5 hours on my phone every day meant I was wasting 53 days per year! 53 days!!! Do you know how much I could do with 53 days!?

That's when I knew something had to change.

“What do you mean Happy New Year? It’s March!” I hear you say. Well for those who gave annualised thinking the flick and committed to setting 12 week goals, Happy New Year!

Back in January, I sat down to do what I would normally do and set goals for 2024 that are either so big that they hard to measure, or so small that they can be achieved within the first few months of the year. After reading the 12 Week Year by Brian Moran and Michael Lennington, I realised that setting annual goals was holding me back and instead, I committed to setting goals for the next 12 weeks.

In a bizarre twist of fate, over summer, I decided to take up playing cricket. For context, I had never played, never watched, and had never been remotely interested in cricket. If you had told me in August 2023 that I would be playing cricket on my birthday, my response would have been ‘what, at gunpoint?’.

Action creates motivation, not the other way around!

Around 80% of all New Year’s resolutions fail, with most failing by February. Most people will chalk this up to ‘a lack of motivation’ leaving them unable to follow through on their goals. But in fact, it’s the lack of understanding of how motivation works and where it comes from that’s the real culprit.
